The Washington State Massage Emergency Response Team (MERT-WA) is a volunteer program of the Washington Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA-WA). MERT-WA is a group of licensed professional massage therapists, trained for deployment to disaster sites or emergency response exercise sites to deliver chair or table massages for first responder workers. The MERT-WA team integrates into the existing Incident Command System structure and works the commanding agency such as the Red Cross, Washington State National Guard or Forest Service, or county and local response agencies.
MERT-WA offers massage therapists a way to “give back” to those brave men and women who risk their lives for us every day: fire fighters, police/sheriffs, National Guard, Federal,Tribal, state, county and local emergency response teams and volunteers. This service is free of charge and our way to say “Thank you” in a meaningful and supportive way. MERT-WA will deploy a “Response” team, when invited by the incident commander, to short-notice emergent situations: forest/range fires, search and rescue or recoveries, and earthquake or environmental disasters; or an “Outreach” team to planned/scheduled field or command-post exercises, drills and events.
